Day 17 – Sioux Falls to Cookeville

Well this was the last day of my trip.  I am writing in past tense because it was a month ago now.  Some people said they would like me to finish the blog of the trip.  I decided to do it this evening (October 18) because I will be posting photos of the trip tonight.  Anyway nothing much happened on this day.  I didn’t stop to photograph anywhere.  I almost got run off the road in Nebraska by a minivan who switched into my lane.  I got a little lost in St. Louis due to construction.  Since we are done with the trip and all the bills are in here is a break down of the trip and what it cost.   Gas: ...

Day 16 – A Long Drive

Day 16 – A Long Drive

I awoke to an overlook of Billings, Montana.  I proceeded to drive down into town and stopped at Hardee’s for Breakfast and a Bathroom Break.  I used to love Hardee’s but recently I am noticing the food is mostly just grease and salt.  I ended up not eating all I ordered just because it really didn’t taste all that good.  I checked my route and saw I would be getting close to Devil’s Tower on my return trip so I programmed that into the GPS and headed that way.   Devil’s Tower is pretty interesting.  I am sure we are all familiar with it as it was the site for Spielburg’s...

Day 15 (Part 2) – Starting the Trip Home

Day 15 (Part 2) – Starting the Trip Home

Well I am writing this now after already being home a day.  But I wanted to go ahead and finish up the blog so here goes.  I left Canada and it was just too foggy, rainy, and generally wet to try to photograph anymore in Glacier National Park.  Just before leaving Waterton it had gotten real windy and the temperature was dropping anyway.  I was on the lookout for a dock to photograph from and the wind just got to a point it would cut through your layer of clothes pretty quick.  I needed to leave soon as the border closed at 6pm anyway.  I proceeded to Glacier thinking I would get my last...

Day 15 – Glacier National Park to Canada

Day 15 – Glacier National Park to Canada

I got up around 8 in the morning.  It will be hard to photograph here today, the clouds are low so no grand vistas and its raining just a bit too much to go looking for wildlife.  I think I will go to Canada, if the weather isn’t better up there I will just make a day of being out of the country for the first time in my life.  I am looking forward to it in either case.   Made it through customs without a hitch.  I really like the town of Waterton and the weather is cooperating enough to get some really good shots or so I think.  Most of my shots recently feel more...

Day 14 – Glacier National Park

Day 14 – Glacier National Park

Well today is the day I make it to Glacier National Park.  I was pretty tired from my travels and had considered not coming to here.  I know a lot of people who have been out west who don’t make it to Glacier because its a lot further out of the way then most are willing to travel.  Currently I am in Kalispell, Montana.  I am staying in the Travel Lodge here.  Soon I will set out for the park.   Wow, this blows away everything I have seen before.  It is just the best.  I can’t believe how large everything is, it really puts things into perspective.  I have bypassed Avalanche...

Day 13 – Yellowstone to Glacier

Day 13 – Yellowstone to Glacier

Good morning from Livingston, Montana.  I slept just outside of Gardiner, Montana on a pull off where some other vehicles were doing the same thing.  Today I hope to be in Glacier National Park at some point.  My posts have been intermittent due to lack of wifi available.  In Yellowstone cell service was nearly non-existent.  I may not be able to post again until after I leave Glacier National Park.     Well I am currently awaiting for the Lolo Creek Steak House to open (45 minutes or so).  One of the things I did before leaving was to see if any of Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-ins,...

Day 12 – Grand Tetons to Yellowstone

Day 12 – Grand Tetons to Yellowstone

This has been the most uneventful day.  The most exciting thing I seen today was a bird of prey grab a fish out of the water, I think it might of been Osprey.     I ended up spending the night at the Colter Bay campsite and woke early to get to the Jenny Lake Overlook to photograph sunrise on the Tetons.  One thing that was cool was I met Brian from Kingston, Tennessee and his wife.  He showed me photographs he had taken in Yellowstone.  He had a lot of amazing photographs.  He gave me a lot of good wildlife locations in Yellowstone.  He got my information and I may end up going...

Day 11 – More Grand Tetons

Day 11 – More Grand Tetons

I had decided to extend my stay in the Grand Tetons.  I kept discovering locations that would make good sunrise and sunset shots.  Also I wanted to see if I could get some good Milky Way shots over the Tetons.  For the most part the shots I was hoping for didn’t turn out but I got to see a lot of pretty places and a lot of animals and met lots of interesting people.     The day started out with waking up at the hostel and getting on the layers of clothing necessary for early mornings up here.  I preceded to head into the park and went to Schwabacher Road to the lower landing. ...

Day 10 – Hanging around the Tetons

Day 10 – Hanging around the Tetons

I awoke this morning to a chilling 37 degrees, Sleeping in my car at the Gros Ventre campground for about 4 hours, it was too cold to sleep with just a blanket and the sleeping bag was under a bunch of other stuff and not worth the hassle for another hour of sleep.   After putting on another shirt, two pullovers and a heavy jacket starting the car and turning on the heat full blast I finally started to warm up.  I had to store my peanut butter and jelly in a bear box near the restrooms the night before so I retrieved that.  I had arrived at the park about 12:30 or so I had not seen anything...

Day 9 – Aspen to Grand Tetons

Day 9 – Aspen to Grand Tetons

The Score: Miles=???? PB&J=2  McDonald's Iced Tea=12   I started the morning with a trip back up to the Maroon Bells.  They are very beautiful in the morning with the light coming in.  Aspen is a smallish town from what I have seen of it.  I am not sure how big it really is but from what I have seen it has kept it’s alpine small town appeal.  Not long after photographing the maroon bells I decided to make my way to Jackson and the Grand Tetons.  It was stated to be a 9 hour trip but I was looking for an portable external hard-drive as I have filled up my current external...
